Balloon race v2 released!

  • Moved the dispenser in the balloons to the front.

Bug fixes:

  • You can’t get any ammo anymore when on the top deck.
  • Optimized the dust particles at the bottom of the cliff. (some people may get better fps here now)
  • Fixed the dark barrels at the second Control Point.
  • Fixed the safety teleporter on the underside of the balloon which was sticking out, meaning people got teleported sometimes when near the balloon.
  • Fixed a gap in the displacements near the second Control Point (Thanks Darth Cyrax!)
  • Removed the Dustbowl messages.


  • Added more clipping brushes and safety teleports.
  • Added glass to the back of the balloon ship window. (this is a bit stronger than the normal glass)

Bug fixes:

  • The dispenser in the balloon is now non-solid.


  • New balloon ships, double decks and more space!
  • Optional paths for the balloon ships:
  1. If the enemy team has already captured CP 1 and CP 2, your balloon goes through a shortcut in the cliff to CP 3.
  2. If the enemy team has already captured CP 2 and CP 3, your balloon goes straight to CP 4.
  • Added a cave (shortcut) from CP 1 to CP 2.
  • The team that captures a control point gets a temporary speed bonus.
  • New spawn rooms that make the teleporters more clear.
  • Added an explanation in the spawn rooms.
  • New teleporters on the cliff just before CP 2. These enable when CP 1 is captured.
  • Now also compiled in HDR (full) and with cubemaps.
  • Added some very interesting music at the start of the round. 😛
  • More props, details, a sun, sharks, etc.


  • The team that captures CP 2 gets the bottom spot in CP 3. (more favorable) This adds some dynamics to each round.
  • CP 2 is completely remade. Hopefully to be more interesting.
  • Changed lighting and fog to more closely resemble Well.
  • The shield wall in the hangar now has a delay of 10 seconds to stop spawncamping.
  • It’s now impossible to build in the hangar.
  • The balloon ships now explode when the round is over.
  • The hangar is a bit bigger and more well lit.
  • CP 4 is now a huge rock.
  • The balloons now bank (roll) slightly in corners.

Bug fixes:

  • Tried to fix the falling through the balloon bug by placing a safety teleport in the underside and backside of the balloon. Also placed some extra clip brushes to prevent this.

Open Source
This map is open source! (I’m sure you’d all decompile it anyway you sick little monkeys :P)
I haven’t included the textures and sounds so you’ll have to un-pakrat it.

    Good map, Chuckstar! I was hoping to make a specific version for my community, and I was wondering how you put in the song that plays on each round start. Specifically, I want to remove it and possibly replace it.

    There is an ambient_generic entity near the frog at the hangar. Change the sound name to some other song. It can be either MP3 or wav. Be sure not to forget the texture in the cave and the overlays (the ad in spawn) though.

    Haha sweet dude. Been waiting for this a long time. I love the new improvements and fixes and to be honest, I had an orgasm when I saw the new ship. Keep it up. 😀

    I love the concept off the Balloon Race map and have played most of the versions. Although on this one, and I don’t if its the map or the server, but the ship moves A LOT kind of like a glitch. I was a medic crouching on the stair platform charging an uber when all of I sudden I glitched out of the balloon and feel to my death. I tested this and half the time it will do it. So, I just wanted to point that out for ya so you could fix it in your next release. Keep up the good work!

    The falling out glitch is caused by the Source engine having some rather bad network code when it comes to moving objects like tracktrains. The only way to avoid falling out is not to let any other player touch you when you are near a wall.

    Thanks for the great map Chucky. I have had a lot of fun playing Balloon Race.

    Does the open source aspect extend to balloon_race_v1? I would really, really like to make a slighty altered version of v1. I won’t attempt it if I don’t have your blessing.

    Could you possibly upload the VMF file for v1?

    Even if you would prefer not to for any reason, thanks again for creating this fantastic map.

    Hello I know this map is slightly old but I have some suggestions if you plan on updating it or making a v3.
    1. Make the map a little more grappling hook friendly. This map excels with grapple hooks but sometimes they can be a little op at the last to CP’s.
    2. Make the ladder on the side of the ship climbable not a teleport, it makes it way to easy for annoying pyros and spawn campers to board your ship quickly.
    3. Finally please add one or two control points so it flows better.
